HEY MOM

Hey Mom is a collaborative piece that encourages daughters to question their mothers’ views on porn and other intimate matters. The Hey Mom project originated in Auckland, New Zealand during an exhibit called The Porn Project. This iteration features a conversation between the artist, Soleil Launiere, and her mother, Louise Bergeron.

Soleil: So let’s do this. Let’s talk about porn.

Louise: Yes let’s talk porn.

What is your vision of pornography? How would you define it?

I never had a lot of encounters with pornography. The first thing that comes to mind is that it can be pretty vulgar.

But since I’ve seen that you are a little interested in the subject, and I see what you’re doing, it gives me a different impression. I am not easily shocked, you know. It takes a lot for something to bother me. And when I see some things you are doing at the moment, I see it as more artistic. It’s not necessarily vulgar. Yes, we see the body, but it is not unhealthy.

I guess I have two ways of seeing it. The way I saw it before, because of the way I was raised, and how I see it now, artistically… But still, it has to be in good taste!

You said it was because of the way you were raised. How were you raised relating to pornography?

The first thing I can remember is that we were not allowed to see certain shows on TV because they weren’t for kids. I do know that my parents watched porn movies on a film projector in the kitchen, but we were not allowed to go in. We knew they were watching it. I did not associate it with pornography, I was just curious to be able to see. I didn’t even know it was called pornography!

I was raised in a very sexually open environment, without really having seen it. It was there all the time and in my family they always talked pretty raw—especially my father.

I don’t know how to express it, but I had some “dirty’’ uncles let’s say. They were always eyeing my sweater because I had big boobs, and making comments like “You’re growing. You’re growing.’’ But for me it was more related to sex. It was humiliating. I could have died of embarrassment…

Do you mind if I go deeper into this?

No. If I can’t answer, I won’t.

Do you think that what they saw in pornography gave power to men over women?

I don’t know. Most men of that generation gave themselves that power—they felt entitled to make comments on the breasts of women, and even to not hold back about touching them, or giving a little pat on the bum when they went by. It will always stay with me, but is it related? I don’t know.

But where does it all come from?

In those days, men had a lot of power over women. I remember the power that my dad, and the men around me, had. Not just over us kids, but over my mom, my aunts, etc. In our family, my dad had power over everything. I think they were raised like that, because his father was like that with my grandmother too.

I think the men set it up that way—they gave themselves permission to touch the breasts or the bum of a woman, or a growing girl.

That’s abuse, isn’t it?

Today we see it as sexual abuse, but back then, I don’t know how it was seen. I do know it always bothered me.

When my daughters were born, one of the things I wanted to make sure, was that their father would never do that. That was my priority.

I see young men watching porn and often they think that’s how it works. You would think that nowadays, people could tell the difference between film and reality, and would be better informed. But I don’t think that’s true. I think there is too much bad pornography accessible now, and some of it is quite intense. They hurt themselves or try to hang themselves for the sensation…

I think it goes too far. When I see there’s a lack of respect toward women—or men—I am not comfortable. If people are happy and consensual in what they’re doing, though, it doesn’t bother me.

I am not afraid, either, of trying new things. But I do get the impression that it can bother people. In fact, I think it bothers my own husband when I say, “If you want to try that, let’s go for it!” He is more reserved.

2015_soleillauniere_Heymom-5

Do you feel obligated to try new things because you think he would love you even more? Or is it really something that you want to do?

Oh, I never feel obligated! I just think it doesn’t hurt to try new things. I would never do something I am not comfortable with, and I would never force someone to do something they are not comfortable with.

I’m not saying this to look better, or more exciting. I just think that talking openly about what you want is important in a relationship.

I probably got that from my dad, talking pretty directly about sex and not being embarrassed to talk about it. If my daughters had wanted to talk about it more, I would’ve been open to it. But I had two very different daughters, one who was pretty prudish and the other who was open, but who never really talked to me.

Talking about the beauty of it?

Yes, but without making a big deal of it!

Once, you told me that you had tried things with a woman. Maybe you were gently telling me that you liked girls, but I think you were mostly just testing my reaction. You told me that you were with a woman one night and that you liked it, but that’s all you said. I don’t think my response was negative. I don’t remember exactly, but I don’t think so.

No, I don’t think so either.

Anything to do with the body is forbidden. At least back then it was forbidden, so I connect it with that.

Yeah, it’s interesting what was forbidden back then.

It always had been. It’s impossible that the women back then didn’t see what their dad or husband were doing. But we simply didn’t talk about it.

I never said anything when my uncles made comments or passed their hands slowly over my breasts or my ass. It was one reason why I was so shy, and didn’t believe in myself. There are pictures of me where I positioned myself so uncomfortably, folded up, with shoulders pulled forward just to hide my boobs. My breasts were my handicap. Because they were big, men would make comments, would brush against me. I told myself that maybe if I hadn’t had those boobs, people wouldn’t have touched me.

But that’s really more about incest than it is about porn.

2015_soleillauniere_Heymom-9-1

Were you afraid when I was growing up that the same thing would happen to me?

I was afraid for both of you. I told your dad about it too. That’s why, at one point, he wouldn’t touch you or hug you. But I told him that a woman needs to be hugged, to feel beautiful and comfortable with her body.

I read somewhere that men often stop themselves from hugging their daughters, out of fear that they would accidentally touch a boob or a butt. I’m probably responsible for that with your dad. I told him it could happen, and he made sure to not touch anyone.

But then I read that when the father doesn’t show any affection to the child, the child can lose self-confidence and develop low self-esteem. That’s where they start having problems with their weight—they either stop eating or eat too much. Pretty much like I do.

I told him that, and he started to hug and kiss you in a respectful way.

There are so many men who do not respect their children. I think it’s a mental health issue. The relationship between a father and his daughters is very important. That may be why you always felt good with your body. Your dad told you that you were beautiful. Your dad always expressed his love in an appropriate way.

Even your sister who’s more prudish. After she had the baby, she wasn’t afraid or ashamed to nurse the baby, even when her dad was around. It was a natural thing. If her dad had seen her breasts as sexual objects, it would have been different.

We never stopped either of you from making love in our house. We preferred you to do it inside our walls, knowing you would use protection, etc. It was never a guy or a girl every night of course! But we were open about it.

Sex is still taboo around the world. A lot of people are still closed to that!

Even at work, people will talk about men with men and women with women, and they make a face. When I tell them my daughter is gay I feel the tension, then they start saying: “Oh well my cousin is gay” and “I know this person who’s gay…” I think there is still a lot of work to do!

But you were always really open…

Yes I think so. We were never scared to talk about things. Your dad didn’t talk much but he did listen and he didn’t judge.

Are you scared for Thomas because he is a boy? How he will treat women?

I never thought about it before, but I know I would tell him if I would see him do anything inappropriate towards anyone. I think our relationship is good and open enough for me to do so. When there is something bothering me, I’ll say it, but in private and discreetly. I am very close to my little man.

Would you talk about sexuality with him?

Yes, why not! I remembered that I talked to you both about it, how to protect yourself, how to not get pregnant. Disease was not really a worry then; it was there but not as present. I remember very well that I talked differently to the two of you.

Your sister didn’t want to hear about it, but it didn’t stop me from saying my piece. And when I talked to you, you just said “Come on mom…” You didn’t talk much, but I knew you were open to sexuality.

When you started to have sexual encounters, how was it for you?

I never really had problems with it. It was more my lack of self-confidence. Not liking my own body. My body is ugly, big. But when I feel pretty, I feel pretty. For me a body is beautiful when it is well presented, and when you feel good. A woman who has beautiful breasts, has beautiful breasts!

I don’t hesitate to tell anyone that they are attractive. People look displeased—but it’s just like saying hello! Saying they look good is important. It is also true for the prostitutes we meet in the street.

How do you see the prostitutes?

I don’t see anything wrong with it, I just think they should legalize it and make it clean. Honestly, it’s expensive anyway. It would be way better. Some people are working in terrible conditions. They should just legalize it, with clean beds and no disease. People will go do it anyway. It’s everywhere, even in places we don’t imagine.

As long as the people who are doing it, feel good about it. There are often a lot of drugs involved but that may be because they feel unaccepted and shamed.

Do you think we should talk more openly about sexuality in society?

I think we should talk about it differently. A lot of people feel bad talking about it. Young people watch porn; but less than adults do. They’re watching it to learn how to do it. They should make more realistic films. There is much more education to be done.

They say men are sex maniacs and women don’t like it as much as men do. Well, I disagree! It can be different. I would want more but my husband doesn’t feel like it. Does that make me a maniac?

It’s good for your health too! It makes you happier, it has the same effect as exercising! We don’t see enough artistic porn. You’re the one who made me discover it a bit. I think it is beautiful to see. I would go to an exhibition and would not be shocked.

Some people like cowboys—it’s just a matter of personal attraction. Hee hee!

The current Pope is talking positively about homosexuality. He is ready to have homosexual priests, which already is a big step forward. He is not ready to have women as priests but a homosexual man, yes! He is probably homosexual himself so it’s easier, but we don’t know.

OK well, I hope I answered properly to your questions.

Yes, you did very well!

I am so happy we talked! I love talking with my daughters.

Soleil: Alors, allons-y, parlons porno.

Louise: Oui, parlons porno.

On savait qu’ils regardaient ça.

Oui tu as très bien répondu!
