CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: THE GUTS BLOG

July 3, 2015

GUTS wants to hear from you! We are looking for interrogative writers interested in contributing 500- to 1500-word posts to the GUTS blog. Send a short pitch (100-300 words) to submit@gutsmagazine.ca outlining your idea.

Please note that due to funding constraints, we are NOT able to compensate contributors to the blog at this time.

GUTS welcomes submissions from everyone, particularly Indigenous and racialized people, as well as queer, trans, two-spirit, and gender non-conforming people. We publish fresh perspectives from both experienced and emerging writers. Content on the GUTS blog is typically informal and accessible, and often falls within the following categories:

Politics: Informative essays and reporting that engage with Canadian policy, law, politics, labour, and activism. In particular, we are looking for articles covering the approaching federal election as well as the state of federally funded social supports, services, and public institutions in Canada.  We also welcome pieces from or about community organizations that are doing important work they’d like to share with our readers.

Pop Culture and Media Reviews: Timely, playful-but-critical, and informal reflections on television shows, new music and music videos, cultural trends, memes, web series, and other cultural phenomena.

Interviews: Bold, smart, and short interviews with persons of interest. Ideal candidates for interviews are Canadian, feminist/queer allies, up–and-coming or established musicians, writers, artists, scholars, working professionals, and activists.

Personal Essays: Narrative-driven essays and short memoirs written from lived experience and in response to a diversity of current and historical topics or issues. We also welcome informative and non-judgemental tips and stories about self care, sexual and reproductive health, relationships, family planning, money, loss, work, and other difficult but important topics in this category.

Literary Reviews: Reviews of books, movies, theatre, local events, and music informed by both personal experiences and research. We do not require that content reviewed be feminist, but we are especially interested in reviews of the work being done by emerging Canadian and not-cis-man artists.

Graphic and visual essays: Fiction and non-fiction comics, photoessays, and other creative combinations of graphics and text on any topic.

Questions: GUTS is set to launch an advice column, so if you have pressing inquiries about navigating yourself, friends, co-workers, comrades, parents, thought paradigms, siblings, lovers, fuck-buddies, roommates, enemies, institutional entities, or ANYTHING in between, then drop us a note! Consider it an opportunity to sit down at the GUTS kitchen table, where feminism means fierce empathy, decolonization, anti-racism, anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia, anti-ableism, and anti-misogyny. Send us your burning questions and we’ll help you find a big ol’ bucket of water. Email submit@gutsmagazine.ca with the subject line ASK bb.

We look forward to hearing from you. Please send pitches and any questions to submit@gutsmagazine.ca.

With love and solidarity,
Your GUTS editors
